Shepherd of the Hills Play
During summer nights set in the wonderful starry sky with crickets chirping in the cool breeze this Branson Missouri outdoor drama comes to life. The Shepherd of the Hills play in Branson MO stars the 1907 immortal story of Harold Bell Wright. The book was once the second most read book besides the Bible. The stage is the size of a football field and one of the oldest running outdoor theaters in America. Visitors watch over 90 actors and actresses and over 20 donkeys, horses, and mules, a flock of sheep, fist fights, and gunfights. During each show, a real log cabin is burned. It’s love story with a timeless moral message that rings true today. The play’s history started in 1960 when it started and was even further popularized in a John Wayne movie.
Before the Shepherd of the Hills play, kids from the audience can join cast on set to partake in bullfrog races. At intermission there is a tradition that the audience is welcome to go onstage and square dance with the cast of settlers, Baldknobbers, and townsfolk. This all ages show has received raving reviews for over half a century. Without this story, there would be no Branson Missouri. The first tourists to Branson came to see the history and land the story was written about. The Shepherd of the Hills Branson show announced it was closing October 2013; however, because of community support it announced its reopening for May 23, 2014 after it was closed. During your visit, before the night show, visit the historic tram rides with Old Matt’s log cabin tours or enjoy horseback trail rides or one of the world’s longest ziplines!
